Here at Winchester Orthodontics, our expert staff offer the most efficient and up-to-date solutions for correcting teeth that are misaligned. A person’s smile has a significant impact on how confident they feel about themselves, therefore its importance should not be underestimated. Here, we discuss some of the options that are available to our patients and explain why it is so important to have straight and uniform teeth.
What are conventional metal braces?
Conventional metal braces are what most people think of when they imagine going to their orthodontist Hampshire. They can be used to treat a very wide range of misalignment issues and give excellent results. For this reason, they remain a popular option for many of our patients, particularly those who present as more complex cases.
The braces are made up of metal arches which run across the front of the teeth. These arches are fixed into position by brackets. The patient has an initial fitting, then goes for regular appointments to have the brackets adjusted. These adjustments work to gently move the teeth into their desired position.
Lingual braces
These are also sometimes known by a brand name, Incognito. They share similarity with the traditional braces in that they are composed of metal arches and brackets. The crucial difference between the two is that these are positioned behind the teeth rather than in front of them. They are chosen by our patients who want the excellent results that metal braces can give without others knowing that they are having treatment from our orthodontist Hampshire.
Clear braces
People often think that these are spelled Invisaline when they are referring to Invisalign. This is a brand name for clear or transparent braces. They take the form of trays known as aligners. These aligners are tailored to each patient and fit seamlessly over the teeth.
They are a popular choice with many people who are self-conscious about wearing braces, as they are completely invisible to others.
Greater confidence
Irrespective of how our patients choose to have their misaligned teeth corrected by our orthodontist Hampshire, they all report feeling much more confident having completed their treatment. Having teeth that are crooked, protruding or overcrowded can mean that people are afraid to smile or they spend their time talking behind their hands. This can make it difficult for them to make new friends, succeed in their careers and even find a long-term partner. Getting that long-awaited perfect smile can literally be life changing from all these points of view.
Less risk of injury
Teeth that are poorly aligned carry a greater risk of injury in all sorts of circumstances. If a person has protruding front teeth, for example, they are much more likely to damage them in an accident. This can be very painful and further erode the person’s confidence in their appearance.
Healthier teeth
Teeth that are uniform and straight are much easier to clean. If a person has overcrowded or crooked teeth that they do not get corrected, then they are much more likely to develop issues with their oral health. These can include greater accumulation of plaque, higher risk of developing cavities and a strong likelihood of gum disease occurring.
