Here at Winchester Orthodontics, we offer a wide variety of ways to give our patients the smile they have always wanted. One of these is Invisalign. Many people mistakenly think it is spelled Invisaline, when in fact that is incorrect! This is a guide for those of our patients who are considering the treatment, to help decide if it is the right option. We explore what it involves and what kind of patient is best suited to invisible braces from the orthodontist Hampshire.
What are invisible braces?
These braces are one of the most popular and modern alternatives to more traditional ones. They take the form of clear plastic trays that are placed over the teeth. These trays are also known as aligners. The plastic is super soft and flexible, which makes the aligners very comfortable to wear as well as being completely invisible. They gently move the teeth into a better position over time. This is facilitated by the changing of the aligners to ones of a slightly different size every few weeks.
The self-conscious patient
Clear braces are the ideal choice for any of our patients who feels a little nervous about the idea of everyone knowing that they are having orthodontic treatment. This is because they are completely invisible, so if the patient decides that they are going to keep their decision between themselves and us as the orthodontist Hampshire, then they are easily able to do so.
Teenagers may already feel self-conscious about having teeth that are crooked, protruding or overcrowded. In many cases, the last thing they want to do is to draw further attention to those issues. Invisalign may be the solution they are looking for as it gives great results while being completely inconspicuous.
Many adults who have not had the opportunity to have orthodontic treatment as teenagers or young people feel a little embarrassed at the possibility of others knowing they are getting such help later in life. They do not want to have to explain to work colleagues or other parents at the school gates that they are having their teeth straightened. Transparent braces may well be the answer: they can get the smile they have always wanted from our orthodontist Hampshire with no explanations needed.
The self-disciplined patient
Invisalign offers great results, but this is only possible with the help of a little self-discipline from the patient. Because the braces can be removed, there can be a temptation to take them out frequently for snacking or for drinking beverages other than water. However, if the patient does succumb to this temptation, then they are not necessarily going to get the best possible smile at the end of treatment.
The patient who wants great results wears the transparent braces for most of every day, that is around 22 out of every 24 hours. This means that they either eliminate snacking or keep it to an absolute minimum, and generally only take the aligners out for meals three times per day. They also limit their consumption of drinks such as cola, coffee, tea and red wine to mealtimes. This means that the braces will not become stained (and no longer invisible) and that the teeth will look their best when the treatment is complete.
