Why are teeth sometimes dull and discoloured?
Teeth take a big hit over time. We have diets that just aren’t supportive of keeping teeth a bright white colour. Lots of the foods and particularly drinks we really enjoy contain high levels of tannins. Tannin is a substance in food and drink that leaves stains. Particularly high tannin foods include: red wine, tea, coffee, berries, curry, juice and tomatoes. Really anything with a particularly strong colouring is going to affect the shade of your teeth.
What can be done?
There are a plethora of whitening options now available and lots of them mean you don't even need to come to the dentist and whilst some of these are good options, there are many dangerous unverified whitening products circling the internet. Some of them even contain harsh bleaching which can be seriously dangerous for the health of your teeth.

The product
When you come to visit us for a teeth whitening appointment, we’ll assess the health of your teeth just to double check they’re up to scratch for the whitening process. We’ll then take moulds of your teeth which will be sent to the laboratory so your personalised teeth whitening trays can be made.
Once we have the trays back we’ll fit them for you and send you home with your bleaching agent. This should all be very simple, and just involves you wearing the trays and product every night for two weeks. After this time you should see marked improvement in your smile colour.
As your orthodontist Hampshire we love at home whitening because it means that once you have the trays you have them for life and can just pop back for a little bit of product every now and again and top up your smile at home.
Maintaining whiter teeth
Once you’ve whitenend your smile you’re going to want to keep your teeth looking as white as possible for as long as possible and to do so doesn’t need to be tricky. There is food and drink as mentioned which will cause staining and so where you can, try and cut down on those. Coffee, tea and red wine are particularly guilty as, let's be honest, who doesn’t rely on their coffee fix, but cutting down will seriously help. Brushing your teeth as much as possible, and particularly after high tannin drinks will make a difference too.
