Is there an age limit for seeing an orthodontist in Winchester?

As the orthodontist in Winchester, we are often asked if treatments like Invisalign are only suitable for younger patients. Thankfully, that is not the case: in fact, we help people of all ages to improve their smile; and age is certainly no barrier to that!

Many people do not receive treatment from an orthodontist in Winchester when they are teenagers or young people for all sorts of reasons. The result of this can be that confidence in one’s smile is not as it should be; and as time goes on, this can have a detrimental effect on a person’s general wellbeing.

What are the options?

Here at Winchester Orthodontics, we work with our patients to ascertain the best possible treatment that is suitable for them on an individual basis. This means that there is no one-size-fits-all; rather a range of possible options that can be tailored to deliver results. We assess the patient by conducting an examination of the teeth and gums. This allows us to offer a choice of treatment plan, which we explain in detail so that the patient is fully informed and understanding of the process before deciding to begin.

Fixed braces

Fixed braces have come a long way since their inception several decades ago, and can be a great choice for some patients. As described, they are fixed to the teeth for a period of time, and can deliver excellent results with the right care and attention. Far from being solely the preserve of teenagers and young people, they are an increasingly popular option for adults and older people too because the finished look can be such a transformation.

Invisalign

Invisalign, which many people mistakenly think is spelt ‘Invisaline’, is chosen by many of our patients. Clear braces are especially popular because they are less visible to others, which can be a concern for those who are getting treatment as adults. These kinds of braces are composed of clear plastic aligners which are created to mould onto the teeth. The aligners are changed over time, allowing the teeth to move into the optimal position.

Apart from the fact that they are not noticeable to others, these kinds of braces have the advantage that they can be removed easily by the patient. They are removed for eating and drinking; however, the patient does have to be quite disciplined about wearing the aligners for most of every day. If this is not done, the patient cannot expect the best possible results.
