Braces, who needs them?

Here’s a question that orthodontists in Hampshire find is open to debate. It’s more difficult than you think to classify who needs braces and who doesn’t. The first thing that jumps to mind when we think of someone who needs braces is a particularly serious bite problem making it hard to eat or speak, or very crooked teeth that are hard to clean and at risk of rapid decay. However, in our increasingly image-conscious society, braces for cosmetic improvements are as good a reason as any.

Consider the psychosocial impact of the appearance of your teeth. According to scientists, social status is becoming more dependent on the state of our smile and less on our upbringing or education. Supposedly people with bad teeth have less chance of success, and people with whiter teeth are presumed to earn more than they actually do.

Orthodontists in Hampshire agree, whether you medically need braces or cosmetically need braces – both are good reasons. The chances are, if you think you need braces, you probably do. If you don’t, you probably don’t. If you’re reading this, you more than likely do. Luckily, here at Winchester Orthodontics, we can help you to achieve the desired results, whatever your motives.

What are the options for adults?

If you are an adult, looking for a discreet option, hidden braces, transparent braces and even invisible braces spring to mind. An orthodontist in Hampshire can advise you on the best solution for your teeth and lifestyle. One of our most popular treatments with adults is Invisalign (note the spelling is not Invisaline).

Why are Invisalign braces so popular?

Invisalign is a virtually invisible brace. Your teeth will be moved with a series of clear, custom-made aligners, which you change every one to two weeks. From one aligner to the next, your teeth become straighter. Invisalign braces not only control the range of teeth movement with each aligner, they also control the time of movement. Specific teeth are moved when they need to, as set out in the Invisalign treatment plan. This makes for an efficient alignment programme.
