Braces and your food choices

When you choose to have a long-term dental treatment like teeth straightening with Winchester Orthodontics, you may have to make some changes in your life to accommodate some aspects of the treatment. For example, you will need to make time to see your orthodontist in Hampshire on a regular basis.

When you work with us, we do all that we can to minimise the impact of getting your smile realigned. Where this is not possible, we talk to you about ways you can integrate any changes into your life. We have many years of experience working with patients who are wearing braces, so we know the common issues and what to do about them.

What can you eat while wearing braces?

Regardless of the method that you work with, braces should not have a huge impact on the food choices that you make. You may be able to choose between a few different kinds of braces. Your orthodontist in Hampshire can give you detailed information on the merits and challenges of each, when you are considering your choice.

If the conditions in your mouth are right, you may be able to work with Invisalign. This system employs removable aligners to straighten your teeth. The bonus of this is that you can take your aligner out to eat, so this method has no impact on your food choices at all. You need to do this every time you eat, and any snack or drink needs to be followed with a quick brush before reinserting your aligner. This change in routine may lead to you eating less or choosing not to snack between meals, so it can affect your eating patterns.

You may choose to work with fixed braces. Some restrictions to your food choices are advised in this case. If you eat very hard or sticky foods, you risk damaging your braces, so it’s best to avoid these. Soft, mushy items won’t damage your braces, but you may find your braces difficult to clean afterwards. Therefore you might choose to avoid them. Ask your orthodontist in Hampshire if you are unsure about something you eat all the time.
